Chapter Thirteen

I landed on my feet and looked around, verifying I was in the same place as before. I saw Calla and waved. She trotted to me. “You made it back. I take it to mean all went well?”

“It did. Now I’m back to get Drake.” I began walking toward Treasure Forest. I didn’t want to wait a second longer. I felt like I had been missing something and I knew that was Drake.

Calla galloped next to me. “Hey. Why don’t you get on and I’ll take you there?”

“Don’t you have to stay at the portal?”

“You seem anxious to be with back with him. It’ll only take a few minutes for me to get you there.” She lowered down and I climbed on.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Calla?” Hesitantly, I asked, “If someone lost her memories, is there any way those memories would end up here?”

“No. This is only for lost things. Not people…or memories. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. It was worth a shot.”

“As important as memories are, you can make new ones.”

“I know. It’s just frustrating not being able to remember.”

“Well, the fey are loving and patient. You’re in good hands.” She stopped and announced, “We’re here.”

Hopping off of Calla, I thanked her again. She took off back toward the portal. I walked into the clearing where we found the chalice and mirror. Drake was sitting against a tree talking to the brownie. He glanced up and our eyes met. Drake scrambled to his feet and held out his hand with Fray sitting in it.

I held out the chalice for Fray to see. “I’m returning it in perfect condition.”

“Wonderful. You may place it back from where it came,” Fray said.

Carefully, I put the chalice back on the ground where we found it. “Thank you for letting us borrow it.”

“So it worked?” Drake asked.

“Yes.”

He grinned and I felt relief and happiness come from him. “Good.”

“Fray, is it okay if we leave now?” I asked the brownie.

“Yes. You may use the mirror again if you wish.”

“No. I think we’ll take our time and walk back to the other portal.”

Fray smiled. “Good luck, faeries. Hope to see you again sometime.” He jumped off Drake’s hand, slid down his body, and scurried into the forest.

I faced Drake and took a step closer. Placing my hand on his chest, I felt his heart beat against my palm. I had missed him if only for a short time. Drake somehow made me feel whole. He wrapped his arms around me and I felt even more comfortable. I felt at home in them.
